Description
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French painter whose devotion to capturing fleeting light and atmosphere helped define one of the most influential movements in art history. More than any other artist of his generation, Monet embodied the spirit of Impressionism, and his work reshaped how painters, and viewers, think about what a painting can be.
In 1874, Monet and his circle organized their own independent exhibition. Among his submissions was Impression, Sunrise, a hazy view of the harbor at Le Havre painted in loose, rapid strokes. A critic, Louis Leroy, mockingly borrowed its title to dismiss the whole group as "Impressionists." The insult was quickly embraced, and the name became a badge of honor for a movement that would change Western art.
Monet's central innovation was his focus on perception rather than precise detail. He was less interested in painting objects than in painting the light that fell on them. His techniques included:
- Broken brushwork: Short, visible strokes of color placed side by side, allowing the eye to blend them
- Pure, bright color: A departure from the dark, muddy palettes of academic painting, with shadows rendered in blues and purples rather than black
- Everyday subjects: Train stations, haystacks, river scenes, and gardens in place of heroic or allegorical themes
- Unfinished appearance: A deliberate looseness that conveyed the immediacy of a moment
Monet's influence reaches well beyond his own era. Today, his paintings are among the most beloved and recognizable in the world, drawing millions to museums each year.
